COMPOSTING KITS ARE AVAILABLE

To encourage composting, Harborcreek Township has compost kits available at $5.00 each. The kit consists of a rolled bin wall 30 inches tall by 12 feet long, three holding pegs, and four sets of stainless steel carriage bolts and nuts providing a straightforward assembly. While you don’t need a bin for composting, having one will speed up the process. Leaves are an excellent compost ingredient. Do not add any kind of meat or fish, because these items attract rodents. Don’t add bones to your compost, because they don’t compost and will show up in your garden. Avoid kitchen fat, because it decomposes very slowly, attracts animals, and covers your material in the compost with an oil film and slows down the composting process. Never add pet
wastes as they may carry diseases that affect humans. Do not compost chips
or sawdust from any sort of chemically treated wood, because you could
be adding toxics to your pile. Composting is the microbial decomposition
of organic matter with the end product being a earthy, dark, crumbly
substance similar to the organic matter found in the soil. Compost
when mixed with the soil can promote healthy plant growth, reduce
erosion, control weeds, and improve soil moisture retention.
Burning leaves no longer fits today's environmental needs.
Sending bagged leaves to the landfill uses precious
space. Leaves are best handled through
composting which is an economical and
easy way to reduce waste.
